Shawn Nacol (playwright)

Born of a Lebanese amazon and raised by a pack of wild lawyers in Houston, Texas, Shawn has worked on over 60 shows in New York, London and the regionals: including productions with the New York Shakespeare Festival, London’s Lyric Hammersmith, Circle in the Square, and Playwrights Horizons. His all-time favorite gig: assisting director Zoe Caldwell on Vita & Virginia starring Vanessa Redgrave and Eileen Atkins.

2010 kicked off with the completion of Shawn's first film, a scandalous short called Photo Op which he directed and cowrote alongside the sold-out off-Broadway run of his Rough Sketch, which critics called "hysterical... profound," "tart," incisive," and "fascinating."¥ In 2007, Shawn penned Nether Regions, a necromantic thriller for Lynn Collins and Steve Strait currently being adapted for publication as a a comic series by APE entertainment...  In 2006, MARS Theatricals workshopped psychoPharm (a mindbender) in NYC, preparatory to its Off-Bway premiere. In August of 2005, the Williamstown Theatre Festival did a reading of Drawing Monsters (a weird tale) which Wendy Kesselman called “a great, coiled serpent that swallows you whole… seductive and venomous.” In 2004, Tribeca Films began developing Trophy Wife (an extramarital affair) as a feature film for Amy Poehler. In 2002, Stages Rep did a workshop in Houston soon after the play won the Eric Bentley Prize and took first place at the Southwest Festival for New Plays. Tony-winning producer Randall Wreghitt workshopped it in autumn 2000 with Marian Seldes. Nicky Silver called the play “a hip, sleek update of The Women and The Philadelphia Story.” Slay Belles (a christmas stalking) won both the Best Play and Audience Choice Awards at the Tenth Annual Edward Albee Theatre Conference. In December 2002, it won a spot in Dallas’ Christmas at Ground Zero Festival. After Ours (a light noir) was worked at Playwrights Horizons in 1996. In London, Richard Sheppard commissioned and produced The Carnivorous Salon (a comedy without manners).  In 1994, the Ridiculous Theatrical Company commissioned a modern adaptation of Venus in Furs, which became Venus in Fuzz (a hittin’ myth).  Other plays include Punching Judy and Happy Cage. Shawn graduated with Honors from Columbia in three years with a degree in comparative religion. He is a member of EDNA, the New Group, theAtrainplays, and the Dramatists Guild.

As you read this, Shawn is teaching literature and Dæmonology to gifted kids at the Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn and prepping Taste Buds, a culinary romcom which he'll also direct. Up Next: Wreck Room for the stage and an acapella musical.
